Candidates who need additional foundations can review our CompTIA A+ Core 1 preparation, CompTIA Network+ N10-009 preparation, and CompTIA Linux+ XK0-006 preparation. Learners interested in hybrid infrastructure can also explore our CompTIA Cloud+ CV0-004 preparation.

About the CompTIA Server+ SK0-005 Exam

CompTIA Server+ is a vendor-neutral certification that validates the practical skills required to manage servers in data centers, enterprise networks, virtualized environments, and hybrid infrastructure.

The SK0-005 examination includes a maximum of 90 multiple-choice and performance-based questions. Candidates receive 90 minutes to complete the examination.

There are no mandatory certification prerequisites. However, CompTIA recommends knowledge equivalent to CompTIA A+ and approximately 18–24 months of hands-on experience working in a server environment.

The examination assesses your ability to install server hardware, manage server operating systems, configure storage, support virtualization, apply security controls, implement backup and disaster-recovery procedures, and troubleshoot server problems.

The official examination is delivered through Pearson VUE’s CompTIA testing program. Candidates should verify current registration fees, delivery options, identification requirements, languages, and testing policies before scheduling.

Score and Pass Mark

The passing score for the CompTIA Server+ SK0-005 examination is 750 on a scaled range of 100–900.

A scaled score of 750 does not represent a fixed percentage of correctly answered questions. CompTIA applies a scaled scoring process, and questions may carry different values. The precise number of correct answers required to pass is not publicly disclosed.

Candidates must demonstrate knowledge across all four examination domains. Performance-based questions may require you to interpret a rack diagram, configure storage, investigate a failed server, select backup procedures, review security settings, or troubleshoot hardware and operating-system problems.

During course practice, aim to score consistently above the minimum passing standard while completing mock examinations within the 90-minute limit. Candidates should check the official CompTIA Server+ certification page before registering for current examination information.

Server Hardware Installation and Management — 18%

This domain covers the installation, configuration, maintenance, and management of physical server equipment.

You will review rack-mounted, blade, tower, and modular server designs. Lessons explain rack units, cable management, server-room safety, power requirements, uninterruptible power supplies, cooling, airflow, environmental monitoring, and hardware compatibility.

The course also covers processors, memory, motherboards, network interface cards, storage controllers, power supplies, firmware, expansion cards, hot-swappable components, and redundant hardware.

Storage topics include hard disk drives, solid-state drives, SATA, SAS, NVMe, RAID controllers, host bus adapters, direct-attached storage, network-attached storage, and storage area networks.

Practical activities help you interpret server specifications, select compatible components, configure RAID, identify hardware failures, and plan safe server installations.

Server Administration — 30%

Server Administration is the largest SK0-005 examination domain. It covers the daily activities required to operate physical and virtual servers.

You will learn how to install server operating systems, configure local and remote management, manage users and groups, assign permissions, maintain filesystems, configure network settings, apply updates, monitor performance, manage licenses, and document server environments.

Lessons also address virtualization, hypervisors, virtual machines, resource allocation, snapshots, templates, virtual networking, virtual storage, containers, and high-availability concepts.

Additional topics include command-line administration, scripting, automation, directory services, DNS, DHCP, file sharing, print services, web services, database services, monitoring tools, logs, alerts, performance baselines, and asset management.

Scenario-based activities help you manage services, interpret monitoring information, apply patches, allocate server resources, maintain configuration records, and support enterprise applications.

Security and Disaster Recovery — 24%

This domain combines server security, data protection, business continuity, backup, and disaster-recovery concepts.

Security topics include physical access controls, account security, authentication, multifactor authentication, permissions, least privilege, server hardening, firewalls, encryption, certificates, vulnerability scanning, patching, malware protection, secure protocols, and logging.

You will also study data classification, secure disposal, change control, security policies, risk management, incident response, and methods for protecting server management interfaces.

Disaster-recovery topics include full, incremental, differential, synthetic, snapshot, replication, and off-site backups. Lessons explain recovery point objectives, recovery time objectives, retention, backup rotation, restoration testing, hot sites, warm sites, cold sites, high availability, failover, clustering, and redundancy.

The NIST Cybersecurity Framework provides additional authoritative guidance on managing cybersecurity risks and improving organizational resilience.

Troubleshooting — 28%

Troubleshooting is the second-largest SK0-005 domain and requires candidates to apply knowledge to practical server problems.

You will learn a structured troubleshooting process for identifying problems, establishing a probable cause, testing solutions, implementing corrective action, verifying functionality, and documenting the outcome.

Hardware scenarios cover failed processors, memory errors, degraded RAID arrays, disk failures, overheating, power-supply faults, cabling problems, firmware issues, and failed network interfaces.

Administration scenarios address boot failures, service problems, incorrect permissions, application errors, operating-system crashes, performance degradation, failed updates, resource exhaustion, and virtualization problems.

Network and security scenarios include unreachable services, DNS failures, incorrect IP configurations, firewall problems, certificate errors, authentication failures, malicious activity, and unauthorized access.

Practice activities require you to analyze server logs, monitoring dashboards, hardware alerts, event messages, rack diagrams, storage information, and performance metrics before selecting the most appropriate solution.
