How recent must my project-management experience be?

PMI currently requires qualifying project experience to have occurred within the previous 10 years.

The experience must be recorded as non-overlapping months. If you led two projects during the same three-month period, those months cannot be counted twice.

What counts as project-management experience?

Routine, ongoing operational or administrative duties do not normally qualify as project experience.

A project is temporary and has a defined objective, beginning and end. Candidates should separate project leadership from repetitive operational responsibilities when completing the application.

How should overlapping projects be recorded?

Overlapping projects should be listed separately, but the shared calendar months are counted only once.

For example, leading one project from January through April and another from March through June represents six calendar months of experience, not eight.
