Understanding SHRM Certification
What is SHRM certification?
SHRM certification is a professional human resources credential issued by the Society for Human Resource Management.
The certification program evaluates both technical HR knowledge and behavioral competencies. Candidates must understand HR practices and apply professional judgment to realistic workplace situations.
What SHRM certifications are available?
The two primary credentials are:
- SHRM Certified Professional, or SHRM-CP
- SHRM Senior Certified Professional, or SHRM-SCP
SHRM-CP is aligned with operational HR work. SHRM-SCP is aligned with senior and strategic HR responsibilities.
What is the difference between SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP?
SHRM-CP is designed for professionals performing day-to-day HR activities, implementing policies, supporting employees and serving as an HR contact.
SHRM-SCP is designed for professionals who develop HR strategy, create policies, lead integrated HR operations and align workforce plans with organizational objectives.
The two exams have similar structural features but assess candidates at different proficiency and responsibility levels.
Is SHRM certification internationally recognized?
SHRM describes its certifications as globally recognized HR credentials. The examinations are based on the SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge, which addresses HR competencies and knowledge used across different workplaces.
However, employers determine which qualifications they require or prefer for a particular position.
Must I become a SHRM member?
No. SHRM membership is not required to apply for the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP examination.
Members generally receive lower examination pricing. To qualify for the member rate, your membership must be active when you apply.
SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP Eligibility
What are the SHRM-CP eligibility requirements?
SHRM-CP is available to individuals performing general HR or HR-related duties and people pursuing a career in human resource management.
Candidates are not required to:
- Hold a particular HR job title
- Possess a college degree
- Have previous professional HR experience
SHRM recommends having a basic working knowledge of HR principles and practices before taking the examination.
Review the current SHRM eligibility criteria before applying.
Do I need a degree or HR experience for SHRM-CP?
No degree or previous HR experience is currently required for SHRM-CP eligibility.
Nevertheless, the examination assesses operational HR knowledge and workplace judgment. Candidates without HR experience should complete substantial preparation before testing.
What are the SHRM-SCP eligibility requirements?
SHRM-SCP candidates generally need at least three years of experience performing strategic-level HR or HR-related work.
An alternative pathway is available to professionals who have held an SHRM-CP credential for at least three years and are working in, or transitioning into, a strategic-level HR role.
SHRM-SCP candidates do not need a particular HR job title or college degree.
What qualifies as strategic-level HR work?
Strategic HR work may include:
- Developing HR policies and procedures
- Creating workforce strategies
- Aligning HR priorities with organizational objectives
- Directing integrated HR operations
- Leading organizational change
- Using workforce metrics for business decisions
- Advising senior leadership
- Overseeing enterprise-wide HR programs
Performing isolated administrative duties is not the same as leading strategic HR work.
What is the SHRM-SCP 1,000-hour requirement?
Applicants must demonstrate at least 1,000 hours of strategic-level HR or HR-related work during each calendar year claimed toward the three-year experience requirement.
Working more than 1,000 hours in one calendar year does not create more than one year of qualifying experience.
Does part-time or consulting experience count?
Part-time work can qualify when the candidate meets the 1,000-hour annual requirement.
HR consultants may count qualifying strategic work performed for clients. Candidates should maintain records that can verify their duties and contracted hours if SHRM reviews the application.
How do I choose between SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP?
Choose the examination that reflects the work you currently perform or most recently performed.
SHRM-CP is generally appropriate when your responsibilities involve:
- Implementing policies
- Supporting daily HR operations
- Recruiting and onboarding
- Employee relations support
- Benefits administration
- Responding to employee questions
SHRM-SCP is generally appropriate when your responsibilities involve:
- Developing strategy
- Creating organizational policy
- Advising executive leaders
- Leading enterprise HR operations
- Interpreting workforce metrics
- Aligning HR programs with business goals
Reviewing the proficiency indicators in the SHRM BASK can help you select the appropriate level.
Applications, Fees and Scheduling
How do I apply for a SHRM certification exam?
The normal process is:
- Select SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP.
- Confirm that you meet the eligibility criteria.
- Create or access your SHRM account.
- Apply during an open application period.
- Enter the requested eligibility information.
- Request accommodations if needed.
- Pay the applicable examination fee.
- Complete eligibility verification if selected.
- Receive an Authorization to Test letter.
- Schedule the examination with Prometric.
Read the current SHRM Certification Handbook before applying.
When are SHRM certification exams offered?
SHRM generally provides two annual testing windows.
The first normally runs from May through the middle of July. The second normally runs from December through the middle of February of the following year.
Each window has early-bird and standard application periods. Exact dates change, so review the current exam options and fees.
How much does the SHRM exam cost?
At the time of this review, early-bird pricing for SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP was:
- SHRM member: $350
- Nonmember: $450
Standard pricing was:
- SHRM member: $399
- Nonmember: $499
Rates include a nonrefundable application fee. Additional charges can apply for late registration, transfers, cancellations, rescheduling, retesting or results review.
Always confirm current pricing before applying.
Are discounted student and military fees available?
SHRM provides reduced examination pricing for candidates who meet its student or military eligibility requirements.
Students must be enrolled in a qualifying HR degree program to receive student pricing. Military eligibility depends on factors identified by SHRM, including educational background, career field and service.
What is an Authorization to Test letter?
An Authorization to Test letter, commonly called an ATT, confirms that the candidate has been approved to schedule the examination.
The letter includes the Eligibility ID required when arranging the appointment with Prometric. Confirm that the name on the ATT matches the government-issued identification you will present.
How do I schedule the SHRM exam?
After receiving the ATT letter, schedule the appointment through Prometric using the instructions supplied by SHRM.
Schedule early because preferred dates, locations and times can fill. Waiting until the end of the testing window can make it difficult to obtain a suitable appointment.
Can SHRM verify my eligibility?
SHRM conducts eligibility-verification reviews during testing windows. Candidates selected for review may have to submit documentation confirming their reported work experience.
The applicant is responsible for obtaining and providing the documentation. False or misleading information can result in denial, forfeiture of fees or additional disciplinary action.
Are testing accommodations available?
Yes. SHRM provides reasonable accommodations for qualifying disabilities and medical conditions.
The request should be indicated during the application. SHRM may require a completed accommodations form and professional evaluation before approving the request.
Do not schedule a standard appointment and assume accommodations can be added later.
SHRM Exam Format and Content
What is the SHRM certification exam format?
Both SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP are computer-based examinations administered at authorized Prometric testing centers.
The examinations contain multiple-choice questions that test HR knowledge and situational judgment.
How many questions are on the SHRM exam?
Both examinations currently contain 134 questions:
- 80 stand-alone knowledge questions
- 54 scenario-based situational judgment questions
The total includes 24 unscored field-test questions that are mixed with the scored questions.
How long is the SHRM exam?
Candidates receive three hours and 40 minutes of testing time, divided into two separately timed 110-minute sections.
The complete appointment is approximately four hours after including the confidentiality reminder, tutorial and survey.
Unused time from the first section does not transfer to the second section.
Is there a break during the exam?
Candidates may take one optional 15-minute break. However, the examination clock does not stop during the break.
After completing a section and moving forward, you cannot return to questions in the previous section.
What are knowledge-based questions?
Knowledge questions assess understanding of HR facts, concepts, principles and practices.
They include:
- HR-specific knowledge questions covering the functional areas
- Foundational knowledge questions connected to behavioral competencies
Candidates receive credit for selecting the single correct answer.
What are situational judgment questions?
Situational judgment questions present realistic workplace scenarios and ask the candidate to choose the best response.
Several options may appear reasonable. The candidate must select the response that best reflects effective HR judgment, professional ethics and the applicable SHRM proficiency level.
What are field-test questions?
Each examination includes 24 field-test questions that do not count toward the candidate’s score.
SHRM uses these questions to evaluate their suitability for possible use on future examinations. They are randomly mixed with scored questions and are not identified.
Candidates should therefore answer every question carefully.
What is the SHRM BASK?
The SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge, or SHRM BASK, is the framework used to define the competencies and HR knowledge assessed by the examinations.
It covers behavioral competencies and HR functional areas. Candidates should download and study the current SHRM BASK before beginning detailed preparation.
What content areas are tested?
Approximately half of the examination focuses on behavioral competency clusters:
- Leadership: 19%
- Business: 17.5%
- Interpersonal: 13.5%
The other half covers HR knowledge domains:
- People: 19%
- Organization: 18%
- Workplace: 13%
Candidates should prepare across every cluster and domain rather than concentrating on one familiar HR specialty.
Are SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP questions the same?
Both examinations use the same general structure, content framework and question-type distribution.
However, the expected proficiency differs. SHRM-CP evaluates operational-level competency, while SHRM-SCP evaluates strategic and senior-level competency.
SHRM-SCP scenarios may require broader organizational analysis, long-term planning and executive-level judgment.
Is the SHRM exam open-book?
No. SHRM certification examinations are closed-book.
Books, notes, phones, study materials, smartwatches and unauthorized electronic devices are prohibited. Personal calculators are also prohibited under current test-center rules.
Can I take the SHRM exam online from home?
SHRM currently delivers its certification examinations at authorized Prometric testing centers.
Do not assume that home-based remote testing is available. Confirm the current delivery options when applying because testing policies may change.
Scores, Results and Retakes
What score is required to pass?
SHRM reports results using a scaled-score range of 120 to 200.
Candidates who meet the passing standard receive a reported score of 200. This does not mean that the candidate answered every question correctly. It indicates that the required certification standard was met.
Candidates who do not pass receive a scaled score below 200 and diagnostic feedback.
When will I receive my result?
Candidates normally receive a preliminary pass or did-not-pass decision at the testing center after completing the examination.
Official results and the Candidate Score and Feedback Report are generally made available in the SHRM Certification Portal approximately two to three weeks later.
Can I retake the exam if I fail?
Yes, but you cannot retake the same examination during the same testing window.
You must apply as a new candidate for the next or a later testing window and pay the full examination fee. SHRM currently does not place a lifetime limit on the number of times a candidate can reapply.
Use the diagnostic feedback report to guide preparation before retesting.
Can I reschedule or cancel my appointment?
Appointments can generally be changed within the same testing window when the request is made at least five business days before the scheduled examination.
Prometric fees may apply. Changes attempted less than five business days before the appointment can result in forfeiture of the examination fees.
Check the current policy before making a change.
SHRM Certification Exam FAQs About Preparation
What is the best way to prepare?
Begin with the current SHRM BASK and identify the proficiency level for your chosen examination.
An effective plan should include:
- Reviewing all behavioral competencies.
- Studying all HR functional areas.
- Comparing operational and strategic HR decisions.
- Completing knowledge-based practice questions.
- Practicing situational judgment scenarios.
- Reviewing why each incorrect option is weaker.
- Completing timed practice examinations.
- Practicing two separately timed sections.
- Reviewing professional ethics and workplace judgment.
- Preparing for the Prometric testing environment.
Avoid relying on memorized questions or unauthorized exam content.
How long should I study?
The appropriate study period depends on your HR background, chosen certification level and diagnostic-test performance.
Begin with a baseline assessment. Develop a schedule that assigns more time to unfamiliar competency clusters and knowledge domains.
SHRM-SCP candidates should devote particular attention to strategic decision-making rather than relying only on operational HR experience.
How do I maintain SHRM certification?
SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP credentials must be recertified every three years.
Credential holders can recertify by earning 60 Professional Development Credits during the three-year cycle or by retaking the certification examination under SHRM’s recertification rules.
Review the SHRM recertification requirements for eligible activities, deadlines and processing fees.
