What Is PTE Academic?

The assessment measures four communicative skills:

PTE Academic Speaking Preparation

The Speaking section evaluates how clearly and effectively candidates communicate in English. Depending on the task, scoring can consider content, pronunciation, oral fluency, relevance and the accurate reproduction of information.

In Read Aloud, candidates see an academic passage of up to approximately 60 words and read it into the microphone. Preparation time varies according to the length of the passage.

Candidates hear a sentence once and must repeat it as accurately as possible. The recording can range from a short phrase to a sentence lasting several seconds.

The lessons also teach candidates how to preserve sentence rhythm, grammatical structure and important content words when perfect recall is difficult.

Describe Image

Describe Image presents a graph, chart, map, photograph, diagram or another visual. Candidates receive approximately 25 seconds to prepare and 40 seconds to speak.

The PTE Academic exam preparation course provides a flexible response structure covering:

Answer Short Question

Answer Short Question assesses a candidate’s ability to understand a spoken question and provide a brief, accurate response. Often, one or two words are sufficient.

The course includes practice involving academic vocabulary, general knowledge, common objects, occupations, measurements, locations and everyday concepts. Students learn to answer directly instead of adding unnecessary information.

Summarize Group Discussion

Summarize Group Discussion is one of the newer PTE Academic speaking tasks. Candidates listen to a discussion involving three speakers and summarize the conversation in their own words.

The recording can last up to three minutes. After it ends, candidates receive approximately 10 seconds to prepare and up to two minutes to speak.

This integrated Listening and Speaking task requires candidates to identify:

• The main topic of the discussion

• Each speaker’s position or contribution

• Areas of agreement or disagreement

• Important examples and supporting details

• Relationships between the speakers’ ideas

• The overall conclusion or outcome

The course teaches structured note-taking that separates each speaker’s contribution. Candidates then practise producing a connected summary instead of repeating isolated statements.

Respond to a Situation

Respond to a Situation presents a written and spoken description of an academic or everyday situation. Candidates must explain what they would say to the person involved.

Candidates receive approximately 10 seconds to prepare and 40 seconds to respond. The answer must address the situation accurately and use a suitable formal or informal register.

Summarize Written Text

Candidates read an academic passage of up to approximately 300 words and write a one-sentence summary. The response must contain between 5 and 75 words and must be completed within 10 minutes.

Listening recordings play automatically and are normally heard only once. Candidates may take notes using the erasable noteboard provided at the test center.

Listening Multiple Choice

Listening Fill in the Blanks

Candidates see a transcript containing gaps while listening to a recording. They type the missing words into the appropriate spaces.

Highlight Correct Summary

Candidates listen to a recording and select the written summary that best represents its content.

Select Missing Word

The final part of an audio recording is replaced by a tone. Candidates select the option that best completes the recording.

Highlight Incorrect Words

Candidates listen to a recording while reading a transcript. They must identify words in the transcript that differ from what the speaker says.

The course develops concentration, sound-to-text matching and awareness of similar-sounding words. Candidates also learn to avoid selecting correct words unnecessarily.

Write from Dictation

Candidates hear a sentence and type it exactly. This task combines listening comprehension, working memory, grammar and spelling.

Students practise retaining meaningful phrases, reconstructing sentence structure and checking small grammatical details such as articles, prepositions, verb endings and plurals.

Understanding PTE Academic Scores

PTE Academic is scored on a scale from 10 to 90. Candidates receive an overall score and separate communicative-skill scores for:

The overall score reflects performance throughout the test and is not simply the average of the four communicative-skill scores.

Pearson uses automated scoring for the examination. Multiple-choice items are generally marked as correct or incorrect, while complex spoken and written responses are evaluated using several scoring traits.
